Welcome

Welcome to 5th grade!

We are happy to welcome you to the Fifth Grade! We look forward to a very exciting and productive 2018-2019  school year. Fifth Grade is a very important year in your child's life.  They will experience an incredible amount of growth and have many opportunities for great accomplishments and success throughout the year. We will be working as a team to help ensure your child's continued development at P.S 179. The most successful education is one in which parents and teachers work together to support the student.  We look forward in working with you this school year.

    Parent Workshop - November 26th at 2:30 pm in room 5-509 - Parents please attend this workshop. We will be discussing our new approach on literacy and our New Math program and how you can help your child at home. Also we will be discussing senior trip and senior dues.

MATH

November Math News!

Students have been learning on to multiply 3 digit by 2 digit numbers. In the upcoming topics, students will continue multiplying but they will be doing so using decimals. Please make sure that your child is fluent with their multiplication facts. If they are not, please have them create flash cards and practice everyday!  

It is important that students also complete their math homework every night. If they struggle with anything in their homework, they should ask their teacher, so that together they can work on the problems. 

Literacy

November Literacy News!

Writing: Students have just finished writing their narratives. Some are working on their second narratives, where they are developing characters and situations. They are using descriptive language to show emotions in a character. Soon we will beginning our second writing genre, Informational writing. Where students will be writing biographies.  

 

Reading: Students have begun reading the biography of Rachel Carson. Students will be learning about text structure and features in a non fiction text. Students will also be reading other non fiction texts. Please make sure your child is reading the assigned chapters every night. This way they are prepared to have discussions in class the next day.
