Welcome to 5th grade!

We are happy to welcome you to the Fifth Grade! We look forward to a very exciting and productive 2018-2019  school year. Fifth Grade is a very important year in your child's life.  They will experience an incredible amount of growth and have many opportunities for great accomplishments and success throughout the year. We will be working as a team to help ensure your child's continued development at P.S 179. The most successful education is one in which parents and teachers work together to support the student.  We look forward in working with you this school year.

    Parents Please remember to send in Senior Due money! The cost is $25 which covers the cost of yearbook and 5th grade t-shirt. 

    Also, if your child has not given the senior trip and they are interested in going please send the $65 to school as soon as possible.

ELA and Math News


This month in Literacy, students will begin reading our new book, George's Secret Key to the Universe. Students will continue to learn skills such as analyzing the narrator's point of view, comparing and contrasting characters and setting, analyzing the structure of text and discussing how certain text features contribute to the meaning of the text. The text is a fifth grade text, if your child find the text difficult to read and comprehend, please have them go on YouTube and search the title and chapter. On YouTube there are videos of someone who is reading the text and they can follow along. 

In Writing, we will be beginning our Opinion Writing Unit. Students have already chosen their topics and will be given research on this topic. They will learn how to write opinion essays and use their research to support their opinions. 

Please continue to have students read every night. Students will be assigned to reading every night, in order to be prepared for the next day's lesson. They will also be assigned homework every night. 

Math News

In Math, students are preparing themselves for the upcoming NYS Math Exams. They currently working graphing and collecting data. They will also begin conversions with metric unit and customary units of measure. They will also be reviewing skills that they learned towards the beginning of the school year. 

Math State Exams will be on May 2nd and May 3rd. 


Student are also working hard in perfecting their math fluency. In class they do fluency drills and also work in math workstations that help with developing these math skills. 

Students should sign on to Matheletics everyday and practice those skills that they are learning in class.
